Cost differences between free-standing service centers and hospital outpatient settings can impact your patients' out-of-pocket expenses. This is particularly true for your patients who are CIGNA HealthCare members covered under consumer-directed health plans which require patients to assume a greater portion of the cost of their care.
In general, your patients' out-of-pocket expenses could be lower for outpatient procedures performed at a participating free-standing ambulatory surgery center than if performed at a participating hospital. And out-of-pocket expenses could be lower for MR, CT or PET scan procedures performed at a participating free-standing outpatient center than if performed at a participating hospital.
Finally, out-of-pocket expenses could be lower for laboratory services performed at a participating free-standing laboratory than if performed at a participating hospital, sometimes as much as 50% lower.
